Dr. Mark Durie argues against Islamic claims that the God worshiped by Jews and Christians (YHWH) and the God worshiped by Muslims (Allah) are the same God. He compares and contrasts biblical and especially Qur’anic teaching about Jesus and Isa; the Holy Spirit and The Ruh Al-Qudus; and YHWH and Allah. In each case, while accepting some points of similarity, he finds radical differences between biblical and Islamic conceptions.
This book is characterised by a clear and systematic treatment and, at points, some very powerful argumentation. The chapter on Holiness is particularly good (see today’s blog), though his treatment of the Presence of God and the doctrine of the Image of God are also very helpful. The Bible is handled well, though I am not as qualified to assess his use of the Qur’an and would be interested in Muslim response to this. There are some small sections of the book, in particular dealing with Islamic concepts of sharia and a sharia state, which depend more on assertion than on presented evidence.
The book concludes with two helpful Appendices, the first summarising points of difference in tabular form, and the second providing some helpful questions Christians might use in discussion with Muslims about their respective faiths.
