I was at Granville Presbyterian Church yesterday, having been invited to give input on how to develop cross-cultural ministry. I emphasised that the key principle for effective multicultural ministry is that of reducing cultural distance and that the two major ways of doing this are finding a leader from the people for the people or establishing a substantial relationship with a church from the people for the people (but not a landlord-tenant relationship) – “the people” being the group the church seeks to reach. As we discussed this together I became strongly conscious of their need to seek the Lord’s guidance. This is all the more pressing since this is a small, struggling church, lacking in resources to reach the multicultural community around it. However, if they unitedly know what the Lord wants them to do then they can be assured, since this is the Lord’s work, that he will provide the wherewithal to accomplish his purpose through them.
