Yesterday, I was part of a group of Christians who were all talking about their common concern for Muslim friends. A number of those in the group were Egyptian Christians. A common theme was the anger they had experienced in Egypt because of unjust discrimination by Muslims against Christians in the occupational and educational spheres. Yet, alongside this was another common theme - the fact that for many of these folk they counted individual Muslims among their friends. Indeed, for one lady her best friend was a Muslim. These dear Christians now long and fervently pray for their Muslim friends to come to a knowledge of Christ.
I have lived in a Muslim country for seven years. But I was not brought up in that country and I had immediate status in that society when I came to live there. I have not experienced the hurt of discrimination at the hand of Muslims as my Egyptian brothers and sisters in Christ have done. So it was stirring to hear them testify how the Lord has helped them to love Muslims and even build genuine friendships with Muslims. It highlighted for me a major prayer point: that God will enable Christians who have experienced Islamic discrimination and persecution to have a profound love for Muslims and not allow bitter experiences of the past to poison their relationship with them.
