In the classic Pure Land Buddhist Text, Sutra on the Contemplation of Buddha Amitayus the heir-apparent to the throne in the city-state of Rajagriha, Prince Ajatasatru, imprisons his father King Bimbisara in a secret location. The king is denied any visitors or food, it being Ajatasatru’s intention that he starve to death. Bimbisara is motivated by all this to get his spiritual life into order. So he prays to the Buddha (Shakyamuni) from his cell - the Buddha is completely out of earshot in an entirely different location - and asks that Mahamaudgalyana1, his friend and relative, might, out of compassion for Bimbisara, come to him and communicate the eight prohibitive precepts that had been taught by the Buddha. The text informs us that no sooner had he prayed than with the speed of a falcon or eagle Mahamaudgalyayana appeared in the locked room before the king, being sent by Shakyamuni in answer his prayer.
