Effective ESL Teaching involves a lot of repetition, so maybe PARROT TALK is a useful acronym for remembering the key principles of effective ESL Teaching:
P: The Praise Principle
Students are given constant praise and encouragement.
A: The Activity Principle
Every lesson should have active students doing lots of different things.
R: The Ratio Principle
All lessons, at all levels, should aim for:
- Teachers and helpers to speak only 20%
- Students to speak 80%.
All language learning activities should be as close to real-life, real-world situations as possible.
O: The Oral Principle
All lessons, at all levels, should aim for intensive oral activity is the major activity for ESL students.
Teachers should be the Guide on the Side, not the Sage on the Stage.
T: The Triumph Principle
Communicating in a new language is a very risky, scary business, therefore: Give the student every opportunity to succeed.
A: The Attention Principle
Attention is divided equally around the group.
L: The Laughter Principle
Encourage laughter in the class.
K: The Knock-out Principle
Knock out all criticism. Don’t say no!
